Ministers give Gedling School academy project the green light

PLANS to transform the Gedling School in Nottinghamshire into an E-ACT academy moved a significant step forward after the Department for Education issued a ‘statement of intent’ from ministers. Schools minister Lord Hill has approved the project in principle and set a provisional opening date of September 2012.

The new academy will now enter an official project phase, with E-ACT as the sponsor, working closely with the Department for Education and the school to complete all the necessary planning and consultation before the academy can open.

The plan will be to provide places for pupils aged 11 – 16.

The Chair of Governors at Gedling School, Anne Baldry said: “I am delighted that we have moved to the next stage of this process. The governors want to secure an excellent education and an exciting opportunity for existing and future students in this school as well as preserving the school as an important community facility.”

Sir Bruce Liddington, the Director General of E-ACT, said: “We now have the formal backing of the Department for Education to take this project forward. We’re looking forward to working with everyone involved in the school and the community to prepare to transform the school into an academy.”
